Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Colossians 4:6 · World English Bible
Words That Fit the Person
The same answer can sound very different depending on how it is given. A hurried correction may embarrass someone. A careful explanation may help them understand without feeling pushed aside. Paul connects gracious speech with knowing how to answer each person. That calls for more than having a stock phrase ready. The person before you has a particular question, history, and capacity to hear what you are saying. Gracious speech does not require avoiding difficult truths. It asks us to consider how our words are offered, not only whether we can defend their accuracy. Before sending a message this morning, read it as though you were receiving it. Remove the unnecessary jab. Explain what might otherwise sound abrupt. If a written reply is likely to confuse matters, consider a conversation instead. You do not need elaborate language. Aim for words that are clear, useful, and suited to the person receiving them.
Morning Prayer
May my words carry care this morning, Father. I can focus so much on being correct that I forget the person receiving my answer. Help me speak clearly without adding unnecessary sharpness. Give me attention to the individual before me, and patience to choose a better way of saying what matters. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, as this day closes, I remember the conversations I cannot take back. You are merciful and truthful. Forgive the moments when my speech served my pride rather than my neighbor. Where repair is needed, lead me to make it without excuses. Thank you for every exchange marked by grace. I entrust unfinished conversations to your care tonight. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
