How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
Psalm 13:1 · World English Bible
When How Long Is Honest
The psalm begins with a question many people hesitate to say aloud: How long? There is no polished introduction, no attempt to make distress sound more acceptable. The writer brings the feeling of being forgotten directly to God. This verse gives language to pain that has lasted beyond our expected timeline. It does not explain the delay or pretend that God's face feels near. It shows that an anguished question can belong within an address to God. If something still hurts this morning, you do not have to describe it as a lesson before you have even named the loss. Write one plain sentence beginning with “How long,” or speak it quietly while you get dressed. You do not need to settle every question before breakfast. For now, let your words be truthful. The psalm offers a way to speak from sorrow rather than keeping sorrow unspoken.
Morning Prayer
Lord, I do not know how to make sense of this long ache. Some mornings I feel forgotten, and I struggle to say that honestly. I bring you the question I keep carrying. Help me speak without polishing my pain, and receive the words I can manage when explanations do not come. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, this day is ending with questions still unanswered. Your faithfulness is greater than what I can measure tonight. I entrust the unfinished waiting to your care. Forgive the harshness that came from my weariness, and help me release resentment toward others. Give me rest without requiring me to pretend that all is well. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
