Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.

James 5:4 · World English Bible

The Wages God Hears

James warns wealthy oppressors that the money they have withheld from their workers is evidence against them before God, who hears the people they have cheated. The harvested fields show that the labor has already been given, yet those who benefited have refused the payment owed, treating another person's livelihood as something they can keep for themselves. Calling God the Lord of Armies, James makes clear that these workers are not unheard simply because their employers hold the money and power. Today, consider whether someone is waiting for payment you owe, whether for a repair, a completed project, or work done on your behalf, and take a concrete step to settle it honestly. If you are the person whose wages have been withheld, bring that wrong plainly to God and seek appropriate help, knowing that another person's refusal to listen does not mean God has ignored you.

Morning Prayer

Father, you hear the workers whom others disregard, and your justice is good. Bring my dealings with others under your will. Provide what I need today, and forgive me for protecting my comfort at another person's expense. Help me pay what I owe honestly and promptly, resisting every excuse to use power unfairly. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, as this day closes, I remember that no unpaid labor escapes your notice. Search the choices I made with money and responsibility. Forgive any unfairness, and show me what needs repair tomorrow. I place my own unmet needs before you. Give me rest without indifference to those still waiting for what they earned. Amen.
