My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.
James 2:1 · World English Bible
The Same Measure of Respect
It is easy to offer more attention to the person who seems important. A title, an expensive coat, or a useful connection can influence how quickly we respond and how warmly we speak. In the verses following this command, James describes an assembly giving better treatment to a rich visitor than to a poor one. He makes a familiar social habit visible and challenges it. Faith in Jesus must not become a setting in which those rankings go unquestioned. The person who cannot advance our plans should not receive a smaller measure of respect. This morning, look at one ordinary place where you have influence. Perhaps you choose whose message to answer, whose idea to consider, or who gets included in a conversation. Ask whether status is shaping your response. Then make one fairer choice. Give an overlooked person your full attention. Consider a suggestion on its merits. Offer the same courtesy when there is nothing to gain.
Morning Prayer
Lord Jesus, expose the rankings I carry without noticing. I do not want wealth, influence, appearance, or familiarity to decide how much respect I offer. Help me notice whose voice I dismiss and whose approval I chase. Let my faith become visible in fair treatment, especially when no advantage comes back to me. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, as this day ends, I remember that the glory belongs to Jesus, not to those the world celebrates. Forgive the moments when I made someone feel less welcome. I entrust unfinished conversations to your mercy. Where repair is needed, give me courage to make it without excuses. Let your gracious rule shape my rest and tomorrow’s conduct. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
