leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Matthew 5:24 · World English Bible
The Conversation You Have Delayed
Is there a conversation you keep moving to the bottom of your list? In this passage, Jesus speaks to someone who remembers, while offering a gift, that a brother has something against him. Worship does not make that strained relationship irrelevant. Jesus gives reconciliation a place on the schedule, not merely a place in our intentions. That may unsettle us when we would rather continue with familiar religious habits than face the person we have hurt. This morning, consider whether there is a repair you can begin. You might send a brief message asking to talk, acknowledge a specific injury, or return something you should not have kept. Avoid making your apology depend on receiving one in return. Reconciliation involves another person, so you cannot control its outcome. You can take responsibility for your part, with appropriate boundaries and without demanding immediate closeness.
Morning Prayer
Father, bring to mind any hurt I need to address. I do not want familiar religious habits to become a way of avoiding responsibility. Help me speak plainly, apologize without defending myself, and respect the other person’s response. Show me a safe and honest way to begin repairing what I can. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, you know how I treated others today, including what I left unresolved. Your holiness reaches beyond my prayers into my relationships. Forgive the resentment I excused and the harm I overlooked. Where peace remains unfinished, keep me from either indifference or anxious striving tonight. Give me rest and readiness to obey when morning comes. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
