Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
John 15:4 · World English Bible
Stay Connected to the Vine
A branch does not begin its morning by trying to become a vine. Its life depends on remaining connected to what nourishes it. Jesus uses this ordinary picture to describe our need for him. Remaining is different from occasionally checking in. It means allowing his words to accompany us into the places where we make decisions, handle disappointment, and treat other people. We do not produce the life he describes through determination alone. Before you begin your first task, read this verse once more. Choose one part of Jesus’ teaching to carry into that task, perhaps telling the truth or loving your neighbor. When you become distracted, return to it without making a speech against yourself. The invitation is not to prove that you can manage independently. It is to remain connected to Christ within the ordinary demands of your morning.
Morning Prayer
Jesus, I am quick to treat my life as something I must manage alone. Keep your words close as I begin this morning. Help me return to you when I become distracted, and let my choices grow from that connection rather than from my need to prove myself. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, as this day ends, I thank you for the life your Son gives, which I cannot supply for myself. Forgive the moments when I resisted his teaching or withheld love. Receive what remains unfinished, and shape my desires according to your will. Let tonight’s rest be an act of dependence, not escape from obedience. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
