Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1 · World English Bible
Put Down the Scorecard
Some mornings begin with an invisible scorecard. Before breakfast, we are already measuring whether we have done enough to feel acceptable: enough reading, enough service, enough effort to balance yesterday’s mistakes. Paul was addressing a specific pressure in Galatia, the demand that believers take on circumcision and obligation to the law. He urged them to stand in the freedom Christ had given them rather than return to bondage. Later in the chapter, he makes clear that freedom is not permission for selfishness, but an opportunity to serve through love. Notice one spiritual practice you have begun treating as a payment rather than a response to Christ. Perhaps you rush through Bible reading simply to mark it complete. This morning, read a smaller portion attentively instead. Let it be an encounter with the words of Scripture, not an attempt to improve your score. Keep the practice, but question the bargain you have attached to it. Freedom changes the reason you act.
Morning Prayer
Jesus, I see how easily I turn devotion into a scorecard. Help me recognize the burdens I add to what you have given. As I read, serve, and make decisions this morning, teach me to act from love rather than bargain for acceptance. Keep my freedom directed toward love, not toward having my own way. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, as this day closes, I praise you for the freedom Christ gives, a gift I could not earn. Forgive me for judging others by standards that cannot make anyone righteous. I place tonight’s unfinished responsibilities in your care. Give me rest, and guard me from returning to the burden of proving my worth before you. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
