I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Psalm 139:14 · World English Bible

Not a List of Flaws

Before the mirror becomes a place of criticism, this verse offers another way to look. The psalmist responds to being made by God with wonder. His body is not presented as a project that must become impressive before it deserves care. It is part of God’s wonderful work. That does not mean you must enjoy every photograph or feel comfortable with every change in your body. Pain, illness, disability, and aging can make the relationship with your body complicated. You can acknowledge those difficulties without reducing yourself to what feels wrong. As you get ready this morning, notice the language you use about yourself. If a harsh label appears, pause rather than repeating it as fact. Then choose one act of bodily care: eat breakfast, take prescribed medication, stretch within your limits, or arrange a needed appointment. Care does not have to wait until criticism disappears. You can treat your body with respect while learning to see it differently.

Morning Prayer

My Creator, I bring you the ways I speak harshly about my body. Help me see more than flaws, limitations, or changes I did not choose. Teach me to care for myself without comparison. As I dress and eat and move today, let my actions reflect respect for the life you have made. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, as this day ends, I thank you for the life I could not give myself. Your wonderful work deserves my gratitude even where my understanding is small. Forgive the moments I measured another person's worth by appearance or ability. Receive my unfinished concerns tonight, and grant me rest according to your wisdom. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
