But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Matthew 6:6 · World English Bible
No Audience Needed
Some things are easier to say when no one else is in the room. A fear we have hidden. A question we cannot make sound faithful. A longing that feels too personal to explain. Jesus gives prayer a place away from an audience. His instruction turns our attention from being noticed by others to speaking with our Father. Prayer does not need to become a presentation. We do not have to make our words impressive before we bring them to God. This morning, find a little privacy, even if it is only a closed bedroom door or a parked car before you go inside. Put your phone out of reach. Tell God one thing you might otherwise edit out of a public prayer. You can speak simply and stop when you have finished. The point is not to produce a beautiful moment. It is to pray to your Father, who sees what happens in secret.
Morning Prayer
Father, I want to speak to you without trying to sound better than I am. Help me bring the concern I keep editing and the question I struggle to name. As I step away from other people's attention, turn my attention toward you. Teach me to pray honestly in the privacy of this morning. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, you saw this day completely, including the moments no one noticed. Your faithful attention is enough; forgive my hunger for praise. I leave unfinished work and unspoken concerns in your care tonight. Give me rest according to your wisdom, and free me from measuring faithfulness by recognition. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
