He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”

Luke 12:15 · World English Bible

More Than What You Own

An advertisement can turn an ordinary morning into a feeling that something is missing. The kitchen looked fine until you saw another one. Your clothes were enough until a screen suggested otherwise. Jesus warns against covetousness because possessions can begin to define life in our minds. His words do not deny that we need food, shelter, or practical tools. They challenge the belief that having more makes our lives worth more. Before making an unnecessary purchase this morning, pause long enough to name what you expect it to give you. Is it usefulness, or the feeling of finally measuring up? You do not need to shame yourself for wanting something. You can simply question the promise attached to it. Close the shopping tab for now. Use what you already have. Let one ordinary thing serve its purpose without asking it to prove your worth.

Morning Prayer

Jesus, I notice how easily wanting more becomes a habit. Help me recognize when I am asking possessions to make me feel important or secure. Teach me to meet real needs without feeding every desire. As I make choices this morning, remind me that my life is more than what I own. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, as this day ends, I thank you for gifts I could not earn or store away. Forgive the envy I entertained and the kindness I withheld while protecting my own comfort. Your goodness is greater than anything I can accumulate. Receive my unfinished concerns tonight, and shape tomorrow’s choices toward generosity rather than grasping. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
