So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

James 1:19 · World English Bible

Let Them Finish Speaking

James calls believers to be quick in listening but deliberate in speaking and becoming angry, because the anger he describes does not produce the righteous life God desires. In the surrounding passage, he connects this posture with humbly receiving God's word and putting it into practice, so listening is more than a social skill: it is part of a teachable life before God. Being slow to speak does not mean avoiding truth or never addressing wrong; it means refusing to let an immediate reaction govern our words. In your first difficult conversation today, let the other person finish without interrupting, then ask one question to check that you understood before offering your answer. If anger rises, take a quiet pause and ask God to help you respond to what was actually said, rather than to the argument you were preparing in your mind.

Morning Prayer

Father, you are wise and patient, and your word deserves my full attention. Help me receive your instruction before defending my own opinion. Give me patience to hear someone out today. Forgive my quick interruptions, and guide my words so that anger does not govern them. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, I bring you the conversations of this day. Thank you for every opportunity to understand another person. Forgive the moments when I stopped listening and began judging. Where my words caused harm, help me make an honest apology. Settle my unfinished arguments as I rest in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
