← Past devotions

Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, but he who heeds correction shall be honored.

Proverbs 13:18 · World English Bible

Let Feedback Finish Its Work

Correction often reaches us before we are ready to receive it. We hear a suggestion and immediately begin preparing the explanation that will protect our image. This proverb contrasts refusing discipline with heeding correction. It presents a practical pattern: resistance can become costly, while receiving instruction can lead toward honor. It is not permission to assume that every struggling person has refused good advice. Being teachable also does not mean accepting every criticism as accurate. It means becoming willing to examine feedback instead of rejecting it merely because it feels uncomfortable. If someone offers correction today, pause before answering. Ask for a specific example if you need one. Later, separate what is useful from what is mistaken or unhelpfully expressed. Choose one adjustment you can make. You can acknowledge a needed improvement without turning it into a verdict on your whole character.

Morning Prayer

Lord, when correction touches a sensitive place, help me stay open long enough to consider it. I do not want defensiveness to keep me from learning. Give me clarity about what is true, freedom to set aside what is not, and willingness to make a specific change where it is needed. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, you are wise and patient, and I place this day's conversations before you. Forgive the pride that made learning difficult. Where I dismissed a needed warning, help me return to it honestly tomorrow. Where words wounded me, keep resentment from taking root. Let your instruction shape how I live, even when no one notices the change. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
