Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”

Philippians 4:4 · World English Bible

Joy Without Pretending

Paul repeats his invitation to rejoice, but he also names its source: the Lord. He does not tell his readers to declare every circumstance pleasant. Their joy has a focus beyond the changing conditions around them. That distinction matters on a difficult morning. Rejoicing does not require calling disappointment good or putting on a cheerful expression for someone else's comfort. You can tell the truth about what hurts while turning your attention toward the Lord. Try giving joy a small, deliberate expression before the day gathers speed. Sing a verse of a hymn while you get dressed. Read a Gospel account of Jesus welcoming someone who was pushed aside. Speak aloud one reason you are glad to belong to him. Do not measure the moment by how quickly your mood changes. Let it be a real expression, however quiet. There can be sorrow in your morning and still something in the Lord worth celebrating.

Morning Prayer

Lord, I do not want to manufacture cheerfulness or hide what hurts. Help me rejoice in you honestly. Bring to mind something true about you that I can celebrate this morning. As I sing, read, or speak, keep my attention on you rather than on whether I feel happy enough. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, as this day closes, I thank you that belonging to Christ remains a reason for joy. You have been faithful through hours I understood and hours I did not. Forgive the envy that made another person's happiness difficult to welcome. Give me rest tonight, and teach me to receive your goodness without comparison. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
