He who answers before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.
Proverbs 18:13 · World English Bible
Hear the Whole Matter
Proverbs calls an answer given before listening folly because it offers a judgment without first receiving the knowledge that judgment requires. The warning is not merely about interrupting or having poor manners: a quick answer can misrepresent a situation, wrong another person, and expose the speaker's lack of wisdom. In a chapter that repeatedly weighs the use of words, this proverb teaches that wise speech begins with the humility to hear what has not yet been understood. Today, when someone brings a complaint, asks for help, or describes a disagreement, let them finish before deciding what their words mean. Ask one honest question before offering advice, and if you have already assumed too much, acknowledge it plainly: listening carefully is part of speaking truthfully before God.
Morning Prayer
Father, your wisdom exposes how little I sometimes know before I speak. Let my words serve your will rather than my need to sound certain. Give me patience to hear a whole account, and forgive my careless assumptions. Guard me from answering merely to protect my pride. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, I bring you the conversations of this day. You know what I heard accurately and what I misunderstood. Thank you for your truthful judgment. Forgive the conclusions I reached too quickly, and help me correct any harm my words caused. I entrust unfinished conversations to your care tonight. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
