Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 · World English Bible

Courage Has a Purpose

Joshua was facing a responsibility he had not carried before. Moses had died, and the task of leading the people now stood before him. God’s command to be courageous came within that particular calling, together with instruction to follow his law. This is not a promise that every bold plan we imagine will succeed. It shows courage rooted in God’s presence and directed toward obedience. Joshua was not being asked to prove that he was fearless. He was being told how to move forward in the responsibility entrusted to him. Your morning may include a difficult conversation, an overdue appointment, or a necessary request for help. Choose one responsible action you have been avoiding because it feels uncomfortable. Prepare what you need, then take that action without waiting to feel impressive or entirely calm. Courage does not have to be dramatic. Sometimes it is a trembling voice speaking the necessary words with care.

Morning Prayer

God, you know the responsibility I would rather avoid. Help me distinguish a faithful step from an impulsive one. I do not need to appear fearless, but I do need help facing what is mine to do. Give me courage to act carefully, speak clearly, and leave room for help from others. Through Christ our Lord, I pray. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, as this day closes, I praise you for the faithfulness Joshua could depend on. You are not shaken by what unsettles me. Forgive the moments when I chose approval over obedience. Thank you for every kindness that helped me persevere. I entrust unfinished duties to your care and ask for restful sleep, according to your wisdom. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
