Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

Romans 12:15 · World English Bible

Beside Someone Else

What if the most important part of your next conversation is not what you contribute, but how you join someone in what they are experiencing? Paul gives two simple instructions: rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Both ask us to make room for another person’s life without immediately turning the attention toward our own. Someone’s good news may touch a disappointment you carry. Someone’s grief may leave you unsure what to say. You do not have to deny those feelings. But you can choose not to let them determine your response. When a friend shares a success, offer a clear, unqualified celebration. When someone names a loss, resist the urge to explain it or find a bright side. A quiet “I am sorry. I am here” may be enough. This morning, ask who needs your company in joy or sorrow. Connection often begins with letting their experience matter.

Morning Prayer

Lord, widen my heart for the people I meet. When another person celebrates, help me rejoice without comparison. When someone grieves, help me remain present without rushing to explain. I want to offer companionship that does not make their experience about me. Show me whom I can reach out to this morning. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Evening Prayer

Father, as this day ends, I remember the gladness and sorrow others entrusted to me. You are merciful, and neither is beneath your care. Forgive the moments I treated their lives as interruptions. Receive the conversations left unfinished, and give me wisdom to return to them when needed. I entrust these people to your faithful keeping tonight. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
