Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 · World English Bible
Before You Pass It Along
A confident claim can reach your phone before you have fully woken up. It may come through a headline, a devotional post, or a message from someone you respect. Confidence and familiarity can make a statement feel reliable before you have considered it. Paul’s instruction follows his words about not despising prophecies. The community was neither to dismiss everything nor to accept everything without examination. They were to test what they received and hold firmly to what was good. That is a useful discipline for this morning’s stream of information. Before sharing a striking claim, pause. Read beyond the heading. Check the source. If someone presents an idea as biblical, look up the passage and read the surrounding verses. You do not need an immediate opinion about everything. Careful examination is not the same as cynicism. It can be a way of treating truth, and the people who may hear it from you, with seriousness.
Morning Prayer
Lord, train my attention when persuasive words come quickly. Keep me from accepting a claim simply because it suits me, and from rejecting it simply because it challenges me. Help me examine what I hear with patience. I want to hold firmly to what is good and be willing to correct what I have misunderstood. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, your truth does not change when my judgment falters. As this day closes, forgive me for words I repeated without care. Show me whether I owe someone a correction or an apology. Let what was good in today’s teaching take root in my life, and let what was false lose its hold. I entrust unfinished questions to you tonight. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
