Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
1 Peter 4:9 · World English Bible
A Welcome Without Complaint
Peter calls Christians to welcome one another willingly, not merely to provide a place while resenting the person who needs it. In a passage about earnest prayer, persistent love, and serving with what God supplies, hospitality becomes a practical expression of life together under God's care, rather than an opportunity to impress guests. The words “without grumbling” reach beneath the outward act to the complaints that can make someone feel like an interruption instead of a brother or sister. Today, consider one person in your church who might appreciate company, especially someone new or often overlooked, and offer something specific and manageable: tea after work, a simple lunch, or a seat beside you. Keep the arrangements modest enough that you can give your attention freely, and ask God to help you welcome this person without making them feel responsible for the effort involved.
Morning Prayer
Father, you are generous and faithful in your care. Make room in my plans for the love you command. Help me offer a simple welcome today with what I have. Forgive my resentment when people interrupt my preferences, and guard me from making kindness a performance. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, you know how I received the people I met today. Thank you for each opportunity to offer company and care. Forgive the complaints I carried after appearing willing. Show me whether I owe someone an apology, and let unfinished arrangements rest in your hands tonight. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
