Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:2 · World English Bible
A Welcome Beyond Your Circle
Who might arrive today without knowing where they fit? A new neighbor, an unfamiliar face at church, or someone joining a group may be carrying the quiet strain of being unknown. Hebrews tells its readers not to forget hospitality to strangers. Its reminder about angels points toward encounters whose significance the host did not recognize at the time. We do not need to know someone’s whole story before offering a welcome. Nor does hospitality require a spotless house, an elaborate meal, or access without sensible boundaries. It can begin with an introduction, a clear explanation, or an invitation to sit nearby. Before your usual routines gather speed, think of one place where you tend to stay within your familiar circle. At that place today, make one small opening for someone new. Learn their name. Explain what others assume everyone knows. Let your welcome say that being unfamiliar does not make them an inconvenience.
Morning Prayer
Jesus, widen my attention beyond the people I already know. I can become so comfortable in familiar circles that I overlook someone standing at the edge. Help me offer a thoughtful welcome without making assumptions or pressing too hard. Let me treat the stranger before me as a person worth receiving. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, as this day closes, I thank you for the welcome I have received through your grace. You know how I responded to unfamiliar people today. Forgive the moments when I valued convenience more than kindness. I leave with you the people whose needs I could not meet. Grant them care, and teach me hospitality that seeks your honour rather than recognition. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
