But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.
1 Corinthians 12:18 · World English Bible
A Place Without Applause
You may know the feeling of entering a church gathering and wondering where you fit. Other people seem established, gifted, or needed. You are less certain what you bring. Paul describes believers as members of a body, not competitors auditioning for the same role. In this verse, their placement rests in God's intention. The surrounding passage makes room for different members rather than asking everyone to become alike. Difference is part of the picture, not a problem to erase. As you plan your week this morning, consider one modest way to participate in your church community. Attend the group you have been avoiding because you feel unremarkable. Ask where your abilities could be useful. Let someone know a need you have, too. Belonging is not only about being useful to others. A body includes members who give and receive. You do not have to become someone else before taking part.
Morning Prayer
God, when I compare my place with someone else's, I can lose sight of the body you are forming. Help me participate without needing to be impressive. I want to offer what I can and receive what I need. Guide me toward a concrete step of involvement rather than standing at a distance. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
Evening Prayer
Father, as this day ends, I praise your wisdom in forming a body whose members need one another. Forgive me for overlooking someone whose service was quiet. Thank you for the care I received today. Where I felt unnoticed, keep resentment from taking root. Teach me to rest in your wisdom and to honour those you have joined to Christ. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
